Depart from your downtown Nanjing hotel by private vehicle in the morning, and the drive to Niushou Mountain Cultural Tourism Zone takes around 40 minutes with smooth suburban roads. Upon arrival at the east entrance, take the scenic shuttle bus uphill directly to the core Foding Sacred Realm area to save physical strength.
Start your pilgrimage with Foding Temple, a well-preserved Tang-style Zen temple with red walls, black tiles and ancient cypress trees. Spend roughly one hour wandering quiet courtyards, incense halls and stone Buddha carvings, experiencing tranquil traditional Buddhist atmosphere and making wishes peacefully.
Next, head to the landmark core attraction Usnisa Palace (Foding Palace). Reserve three full hours to explore both ground and underground sections. On the ground level, roam the Zen Grand View area to appreciate the giant reclining Buddha statue, mirrored lotus pools and artistic apsaras stone carvings. Descend to the five-floor underground palace to visit the breathtaking Thousand Buddha Hall, dominated by a 21.8-meter giant relic stupa surrounded by tens of thousands of golden Buddha statues. If scheduled properly, you can witness the sacred display of Buddha's parietal bone relic and feel the solemn spiritual atmosphere.
In the afternoon, climb the nine-story Foding Pagoda, and allocate around one hour for your visit. Climb up to the seventh viewing floor to enjoy a 360° panoramic overlook of the entire Niushou mountain range, layered forest valleys and distant Nanjing city skyline, capturing spectacular wide-angle mountain and temple shots.
After descending from the pagoda, take a slow stroll around Hidden Dragon Lake, and spend about one hour wandering along the lakeside plank road. The clear lake water mirrors pagodas, temples and green peaks, forming soft poetic Jiangnan mountain and water scenery. You can walk through peach blossom streams and forest trails to breathe fresh mountain air and relax your mind.
If time permits, you can briefly visit Zheng He's Tomb, a historical cultural site recording the great navigator's story, before taking the scenic shuttle back to the mountain gate.
