The tour departs from downtown Shanghai in the morning. Tourists will first take a 30-minute high-speed train to Jiashan South Railway Station, followed by a 40-minute ride on our private car to Xitang Ancient Town. The entire transfer journey takes around 1.5 hours with highly convenient connections. Spanning a full 6 hours of in-depth sightseeing, Xitang is one of the best-preserved ancient water towns in Jiangnan, most famous for its iconic 1000-meter misty rain corridor — a unique covered waterside promenade that shields visitors from wind and rain and serves as the town's signature landscape. Unlike many overcrowded water towns, Xitang maintains an authentic, tranquil and leisurely ancient town ambiance.
During daytime exploration, visitors can wander along ancient bluestone alleys, cross historic stone bridges including Songzila Bridge and Wolong Bridge, and visit cultural landmarks like the Button Museum and Tile Carving Exhibition Hall to discover local traditional folk customs. As dusk falls, Xitang presents its most enchanting scenery: riverside lanterns light up one by one, casting shimmering reflections on the gentle water and creating a dreamy Jiangnan nightscape. Travelers can take a relaxing rowboat cruise to soak in the stunning waterside night views and embrace the slow-paced charm of water town life, before checking into a distinctive waterside inn for an overnight stay.
After checking out of the Xitang inn in the morning, travelers will take a private car to Nanxun Ancient Town. The 60-kilometer journey takes approximately 1 hour with smooth and hassle-free transportation. The itinerary includes 3.5 hours of leisurely sightseeing in Nanxun, renowned as the "most wealthy ancient town in Jiangnan" for its unique combination of traditional Chinese garden aesthetics and elegant Western-style architecture, boasting a subtle and refined luxury vibe. Must-see highlights cover the exquisite Little Lotus Garden, a classic Jiangnan garden featuring delicate rockeries, flowing streams and elegant pavilions, as well as Jiayetang Library — one of China's four great ancient private libraries with profound historical and cultural heritage. Century-old merchant mansions and serene water alleys further showcase Nanxun's perfect integration of natural scenery and humanistic charm, and a short river cruise is available to capture the panoramic beauty of the ancient town.
Upon finishing the Nanxun tour in the afternoon, take your private car to Suzhou about 3 hours. After arriving, you will check into a city-center hotel near Guanqian Street, and spend the evening freely exploring Suzhou's bustling night markets and tasting authentic local delicacies to experience the city's vibrant local life.
The morning itinerary focuses on exploring the Humble Administrator's Garden, with a 3-hour in-depth visiting session. Ranked first among China's four great classical gardens and honored as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, the Humble Administrator's Garden represents the pinnacle of Suzhou garden art. Centered on graceful water scenery, the garden features scattered pavilions, terraces and elaborate rockeries, with layered, changing views and an understated elegant layout. Every step unveils a new landscape, fully embodying the tranquil, natural aesthetic pursued by ancient Chinese literati, allowing visitors to slowly appreciate the exquisite gardening design, diverse plant landscapes and timeless ancient architectural details.
After visiting the garden, travelers will enjoy a 1.5-hour tour of Suzhou Museum, which is just an 800-meter, 10-minute walk from the Humble Administrator's Garden, requiring no vehicle transfer. Masterfully designed by world-renowned Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei, Suzhou Museum seamlessly blends modern minimalist architectural design with authentic Jiangnan garden charm. Its classic white walls and gray tiles, hollow window frames and serene water courtyards inherit traditional Suzhou architectural styles, while sleek geometric lines and ingenious light application deliver a contemporary aesthetic. The museum houses a rich collection of Suzhou cultural relics, calligraphy and paintings, comprehensively showcasing the city's long-standing history and profound Wu culture heritage.
In the afternoon and evening, travelers will spend 2 hours exploring Guanqian Street, accessible via a 15-minute ride from Suzhou Museum. As Suzhou's core cultural and commercial old street with over 1,300 years of history, Guanqian Street perfectly integrates ancient architecture, time-honored commerce and authentic local flavors. Visitors can wander through ancient temples and century-old stores, taste iconic Suzhou delicacies including squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, traditional Su-style noodles and sweet osmanthus cakes, and purchase exquisite local handicrafts such as silk products and hand-made fans, immersing themselves in the lively folk atmosphere of old Suzhou.
The fourth day is fully reserved for free leisure activities, allowing travelers to tailor the schedule to personal preferences. Visitors can continue to discover Suzhou's hidden charms: explore delicate classical gardens like Lion Grove Garden, stroll along Pingjiang Road Ancient Street to admire ancient canal scenery, or relax in characteristic bookstores and themed cafes to enjoy a slow-paced getaway. Alternatively, you can visit modern commercial districts to experience the perfect integration of Suzhou's ancient heritage and contemporary urban fashion.
As the trip draws to an end in the evening, your private car will send you to Suzhou Railway Station or Suzhou North Railway Station, then board a high-speed train back to Shanghai. The whole ride only takes 25 to 30 minutes, bringing this wonderful 4-day journey through Jiangnan water towns and Suzhou classical gardens to a smooth and satisfying close.
