Your tranquil Jiangnan water town journey starts with punctual hotel pickup in downtown Shanghai at the scheduled morning time. Our private vehicle will take you on a comfortable one-hour drive to Zhujiajiao, while your guide shares the town's 1,700-year evolution, canal civilization and local folk stories along the way.
Upon arriving at Zhujiajiao Ancient Town entrance, we first head straight to Fangsheng Bridge, the largest five-arch bluestone stone bridge in Shanghai, built in the Ming Longqing Period in 1571. Spanning wide Caogang River, the elegant arched structure is decorated with delicate stone lion carvings on railings. Standing on the bridge top, you get a panoramic overlook of layered white-washed black-tile riverside houses, drifting wooden rowing boats and winding water channels, presenting a classic Jiangnan ink-wash landscape. The guide will introduce the bridge's Buddhist origin: locals once released aquatic creatures under the bridge to accumulate kindness, hence the name "Fangsheng (Releasing Life) Bridge".
Then we stroll into North Street (One-Line Street), the best-preserved Ming-Qing commercial street in Shanghai, with narrow stone-paved alleys flanked by two-story ancient wooden shops. The street is filled with strong local fireworks atmosphere: traditional stalls sell signature grandma rice dumplings, leaf-wrapped braised pork, fried radish cakes, osmanthus pastries and aged soy pickles. You can wander freely to smell and taste authentic water town snacks, browse small stores selling hand-made silk crafts and vintage souvenirs.
After lunch, we visit Kezhi Garden, the largest private manor garden in Shanghai built in the early Republic of China, carrying the meaning of "studying and farming". Uniquely blending traditional Huizhou garden layout and Western villa architecture, the garden features winding covered corridors, lotus ponds, exquisite Taihu rockeries, nine-turn stone bridges, ancient opera stages and a multi-story library building. Your guide will interpret the garden owner's life story and hidden poetic designs of every pavilion and courtyard; this scenic spot also served as a famous movie shooting location. You can take slow walks along quiet paths to capture vintage Chinese-style photos amid lush plants and ancient buildings.
Next stop is the Great Qing Post Office, the only well-preserved Qing-dynasty postal site in East China, established in 1903. The exhibition hall displays vintage mailboxes, old stamps, ancient postcards and delivery tools from late Qing to the Republic of China, fully restoring the postal operation history a hundred years ago. You can buy vintage-style postcards, stamp unique Zhujiajiao commemorative seals and mail letters to your family or yourself, carrying a piece of water town memory away.
We arrange an optional 30-minute traditional wooden rowing boat cruise along Caogang River. Sit on the wooden boat drifting under stone arch bridges, watch white-washed houses and red lanterns reflect on rippling water, and listen to boat ladies singing soft local folk tunes – this is the most classic way to appreciate Zhujiajiao's canal charm from the water surface.
After the boat trip, you have free leisure time to wander quiet side alleys, visit small craft workshops or pick local specialties as gifts. As soft sunset glow covers the river and ancient buildings, the whole town turns warm and dreamy, perfect for final sightseeing and photography.
When the day's exploration wraps up, our private car will transfer you back safely to your hotel in downtown Shanghai, marking the end of this relaxing one-day Zhujiajiao water town cultural tour full of canals, ancient architecture and genuine Jiangnan folk customs.
