Day 1: Beijing | Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Jingshan Park & Shichahai

Accommodation Accommodation:
4 star/5 star hotel/botique hotel (can be customized)
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

Your guide and private driver will meet you at your hotel in the morning. As you head toward Beijing's historic center, modern office towers gradually give way to older neighborhoods, setting the stage for a day focused on the city's imperial past.

The journey begins at Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world and the symbolic heart of modern China. Standing here, it's impossible not to notice the sense of scale. Wide open spaces stretch in every direction, framed by monumental architecture that reflects both China's past and present. While many visitors come for photographs, the real value of this stop is understanding how Beijing's historic central axis still shapes the city today. As your guide points out key landmarks surrounding the square, you'll begin to see how the capital was carefully planned around power, ceremony and symbolism long before modern skyscrapers arrived.

From Tiananmen Square, we continue directly into the Forbidden City, crossing the same threshold that emperors, officials and royal family members once passed through centuries ago. The palace complex unfolds gradually. At first, it's the vast courtyards and towering halls that capture attention. Then, as you move deeper inside, smaller details begin to emerge—intricate roof decorations, carved marble terraces and hidden side passages rarely noticed by hurried visitors. What makes the Forbidden City fascinating is not simply its size, but the way every part was designed with purpose. The placement of buildings, the height of platforms and even the number of roof ornaments all reflected rank and authority. As you explore, your guide will help bring these details to life, transforming what could be a collection of buildings into a vivid story of imperial China.

After a busy morning, we'll enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant in one of the historic neighborhoods surrounding the palace district. This is a perfect opportunity to sample authentic Beijing cuisine while taking a break from sightseeing. Depending on your preference, your guide can recommend local specialties ranging from classic noodle dishes to traditional northern-style family recipes.

Just north of the Forbidden City lies Jingshan Park, a place many visitors underestimate until they reach the summit. The short climb takes only a few minutes, but the reward is one of the most spectacular views in Beijing. From the pavilion at the top, the entire Forbidden City stretches out below like a perfectly ordered sea of golden rooftops. What makes this viewpoint special is the perspective it provides. After spending the morning inside the palace walls, you can now appreciate the sheer scale and symmetry of the entire complex. On clear days, the view extends far beyond the palace toward modern Beijing, creating a striking contrast between six centuries of history and the contemporary city beyond.

Leaving the imperial district behind, we continue toward Shichahai and Houhai, where the atmosphere changes completely. The formal geometry of palaces gives way to willow-lined lakes, narrow alleyways and neighborhoods that feel wonderfully relaxed. Locals gather by the water to chat, exercise or simply enjoy the scenery, creating a side of Beijing that feels far removed from the grandeur of the Forbidden City. As you stroll along the waterfront, you'll discover hidden corners, traditional courtyard homes and charming bridges that have connected these communities for generations. The pace here is slower, making it one of the best places to appreciate the everyday character of old Beijing. After a full day exploring imperial and traditional Beijing, your driver will return you comfortably to your hotel.

Day 2: Beijing | Badaling Great Wall

Accommodation Accommodation:
4 star/5 star hotel/botique hotel (can be customized)
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

Today's adventure begins with an early pickup from your hotel as we leave the city behind and head toward the mountains north of Beijing. The changing scenery is part of the experience. Busy urban districts gradually fade away, replaced by rolling hills, forests and open landscapes.

Few places in the world carry the same sense of anticipation as the Great Wall. As the Wall first appears along distant ridgelines, it feels almost unreal. Then, standing directly on the stone pathway itself, its scale becomes impossible to ignore. The Badaling section combines impressive mountain scenery with some of the best-preserved stretches of the Wall. Watchtowers rise dramatically from the ridges, while stairways follow the natural contours of the mountains. Walking here is surprisingly immersive. One moment you're looking down into deep valleys; the next you're standing atop a watchtower with panoramic views in every direction. The Wall seems to disappear into the horizon before emerging again over another mountain peak, creating an endless sense of discovery.

After descending from the Wall, we'll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant near the scenic area. The relaxed mountain setting offers a welcome opportunity to recharge while reflecting on one of China's most iconic experiences.

The drive back provides a chance to enjoy the changing landscape once again as mountains gradually give way to city streets. Arrive back at your hotel in the afternoon with the remainder of the evening free to relax or explore independently.

Day 3: Beijing | Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple & Guozijian Street

Accommodation Accommodation:
4 star/5 star hotel/botique hotel (can be customized)
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

After two days exploring Beijing's imperial landmarks and mountain landscapes, today's pace feels noticeably different. Your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby after breakfast, while your private driver prepares for a shorter and more relaxed route through the city. As you leave the hotel, the morning streets of Beijing are already coming to life. Local residents head to work, neighborhood shops open their doors and parks begin to fill with early exercisers. Rather than heading toward monumental architecture or distant mountains, today's journey takes you into the cultural and spiritual heart of the capital.

The Temple of Heaven feels unlike anywhere else in the city. Instead of imposing walls and ceremonial gates, you'll find broad pathways shaded by ancient cypress trees and open spaces filled with local life. As you approach the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, its elegant blue roof rises above the landscape with remarkable grace. The structure appears almost delicate despite its impressive size. Beyond its beauty, the Temple of Heaven reveals how ancient Chinese rulers understood their relationship with the natural world. Here, emperors prayed for good harvests and harmony between heaven and earth. Today, the peaceful atmosphere still encourages visitors to slow down and appreciate the balance built into every part of the site. A short drive later, the atmosphere shifts dramatically. The scent of incense fills the air long before you enter the main halls of Lama Temple. Worshippers carrying offerings move quietly through the courtyards while prayer chants echo softly in the background. Unlike many historic monuments, Lama Temple remains an active religious center. This gives the entire experience a sense of authenticity that visitors often find deeply moving. Inside, elaborate Buddhist artwork covers walls and ceilings, while giant statues rise above visitors with impressive scale and detail. The highlight is the towering Maitreya Buddha carved from a single sandalwood tree—an extraordinary sight that leaves a lasting impression on nearly everyone who sees it.

We'll pause for lunch in one of Beijing's most atmospheric historic neighborhoods—Guozijian Street. The streets here feel noticeably calmer, lined with traditional architecture, small cultural shops and hidden courtyards that many visitors never discover on their own.

The Imperial Academy provides a fascinating contrast to the religious atmosphere of Lama Temple. For centuries, this was the highest educational institution in China and the dream destination for ambitious scholars hoping to change their future through knowledge. Walking through the elegant courtyards, it's easy to imagine students preparing for examinations that could determine the course of their entire lives. Ancient stone tablets, traditional lecture halls and quiet gardens create an atmosphere that feels thoughtful and reflective. Afterward, a stroll along Guozijian Street reveals one of Beijing's most charming historic districts, where old architecture and local culture blend together beautifully.

As the afternoon draws to a close, your driver will be waiting nearby to take you comfortably back to your hotel. The drive back offers a chance to reflect on a very different side of Beijing. Unlike the grandeur of the Forbidden City or the dramatic scenery of the Great Wall, today's experiences have been quieter and more personal—focused on belief, learning and the traditions that continue to shape everyday life. By the time you arrive back at the hotel, you'll likely see the city through a different lens, appreciating not only its landmarks but also the values and philosophies that helped define it.

Day 4: Beijing | 798 Art District, Dashanzi & Sanlitun

Accommodation Accommodation:
N/A (Flexible, can be included based on your needs)
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

Your final day begins with another comfortable hotel pickup, but the atmosphere feels different from previous mornings. By now, Beijing's rhythm has become more familiar. The streets no longer feel entirely new, and many guests find themselves noticing details that might have gone unnoticed on the first day—morning commuters cycling through side streets, neighborhood markets setting up for the day and the unique blend of old and new architecture that appears throughout the city. As your driver heads toward the northeastern part of Beijing, the scenery gradually changes. Traditional neighborhoods and historic landmarks begin to give way to wider roads, modern developments and former industrial areas. This transition perfectly mirrors the theme of the day: discovering how Beijing continues to reinvent itself while remaining connected to its past.

The morning begins in Beijing's most famous creative district. What was once a vast military electronics factory has evolved into a thriving center of contemporary art, design and culture. Yet unlike many redeveloped art districts around the world, 798 has retained much of its industrial character. Tall factory windows, exposed steel structures and weathered brick walls now coexist with modern galleries, public sculptures and experimental art installations. One of the joys of visiting 798 is that it rarely feels predictable. Around almost every corner you'll find something unexpected—perhaps a giant outdoor sculpture, an independent photography exhibition or a hidden courtyard café where local artists gather between projects. Even travelers who don't normally consider themselves "art people" often find the atmosphere surprisingly engaging.

Beyond the main galleries of 798 lies the wider Dashanzi creative area, where Beijing's artistic energy feels even more local. Here you'll find smaller design studios, independent workshops and converted industrial buildings that reveal another side of the city's creative scene. The pace is slower than in the central gallery spaces, making it a wonderful area for photography and casual exploration. It's also where your guide can introduce stories about how this former industrial district transformed into one of China's most influential cultural neighborhoods. Walking through Dashanzi feels less like visiting an attraction and more like discovering a living creative community.

For lunch, we'll stop at one of the area's stylish cafés or contemporary restaurants. The setting itself is often part of the experience. Many restaurants occupy renovated factory buildings where industrial architecture blends with modern design. It's an ideal opportunity to relax, enjoy a leisurely meal and absorb the unique atmosphere of the neighborhood.

In the afternoon, we continue to Sanlitun, one of Beijing's most dynamic urban districts. If 798 represents Beijing's creative imagination, Sanlitun showcases its cosmopolitan energy. Luxury boutiques, designer stores, modern architecture and vibrant public spaces create an entirely different atmosphere from the traditional hutongs and historic monuments you've seen earlier in the tour. Yet Sanlitun is more than a shopping district. It offers a glimpse into how younger generations experience Beijing today. Trendy cafés, innovative restaurants and stylish gathering spaces reveal a city that is constantly evolving while remaining deeply connected to its cultural roots. A leisurely walk through the area provides a fascinating contrast to the imperial and historical Beijing explored during previous days.

Optional Stop: Taikoo Li Sanlitun
If time allows, we'll continue into Taikoo Li, Beijing's most iconic lifestyle and retail destination. The architecture alone makes it worth a visit. Open-air plazas, striking modern design and creative public spaces have transformed the area into one of the city's most photographed urban landmarks. Whether you're interested in fashion, architecture, people-watching or simply enjoying the atmosphere, it's an enjoyable final stop before concluding the tour.

As your driver takes you back to the hotel, you'll pass through a city that now feels much more familiar than it did four days ago. From the imperial grandeur of the Forbidden City and the mountain ridges of the Great Wall to the incense-filled halls of Lama Temple and the creative energy of 798, each day has revealed a different layer of Beijing. By the end of the journey, you've experienced not only the landmarks that made Beijing famous, but also the neighborhoods, traditions and modern districts that continue to shape its future.

Excellent service and a stress-free family trip from start to finish

This 11-day private tour through Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou was one of the most enjoyable family trips we have ever taken. What really stood out for us was the service from start to finish. Jennifer was our main contact from Buer China Travel and she was absolutely fantastic. She responded quickly to every message, patiently adjusted the itinerary multiple times based on our preferences, and always made us feel like everything was under control. It really gave us peace of mind before even arriving in China. During the trip, everything ran smoothly. There were no stressful moments at all. Our guide was extremely kind, patient, and very knowledgeable. She had a wonderful way of explaining the history behind each site without making it feel like a lecture, and she was especially good with our children, which made a huge difference for our family. We also appreciated how flexible the itinerary was. We never felt rushed, and we had enough time to truly enjoy each destination, whether it was walking along West Lake in Hangzhou or exploring the classical gardens in Suzhou. Overall, this was a very well-organized and thoughtfully designed trip. We would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting China for the first time.
