Upon arrival in Beijing, our driver will be waiting for you at the airport or railway station, ready to whisk you comfortably to your hotel. After a long journey, we believe the best introduction to Beijing isn't a crowded attraction—it's the city's everyday life.
Once you've had time to settle in, we'll head into the historic hutong neighborhoods around the Bell and Drum Towers, an area where Beijing's centuries-old rhythm can still be felt today. Unlike the wide boulevards and modern skyscrapers found elsewhere in the city, these narrow lanes reveal a more intimate side of the capital. Neighbors chat outside traditional courtyard homes, bicycle bells echo through alleyways, and tiny family-run shops continue traditions passed down through generations.
As we wander deeper into the hutongs, your guide will share stories of how these neighborhoods once housed princes, scholars, merchants and ordinary families, each contributing to the rich tapestry of Beijing life. Along the way, we'll stop for local snacks and introduce you to some of the city's hidden culinary favorites that rarely appear in guidebooks.
Toward sunset, we'll climb Jingshan Park, a former imperial garden located directly north of the Forbidden City. While many visitors overlook this spot, locals know it offers the most breathtaking panoramic view of Beijing's historic core. From the summit, you'll see the entire Central Axis stretching across the city, with the golden roofs of the Forbidden City glowing beneath the evening light. It's the perfect place to appreciate the immense scale of imperial Beijing before exploring it firsthand tomorrow.
For dinner, we'll happily recommend one of our favorite local restaurants where you can enjoy authentic Beijing cuisine away from the tourist crowds. Whether it's traditional roast duck, hand-pulled noodles, or local barbecue, tonight is all about easing into the flavors of northern China.
After dinner, return to your hotel and enjoy a restful evening.
After breakfast, your guide and private driver will meet you at the hotel for a day that brings together two of China's most iconic landmarks.
We begin at Tiananmen Square before entering the magnificent Forbidden City, the political and ceremonial heart of China for nearly five centuries. As we pass through towering gates and expansive courtyards, you'll quickly realize that the Forbidden City is far more than a collection of beautiful buildings. Behind every hall lies a story of power, ambition, family rivalry and imperial ceremony.
Rather than rushing through the main route, we'll slow down and explore details many visitors miss. Your guide will point out hidden architectural symbols, explain why certain numbers repeatedly appear throughout the palace, and reveal fascinating stories about emperors who ruled from behind these crimson walls. Walking through the palace complex, it's easy to imagine the thousands of officials, servants and royal family members who once lived within this extraordinary city inside a city.
For lunch, we'll enjoy a carefully selected local restaurant serving traditional Beijing specialties before leaving the urban center behind.
As the city gradually gives way to mountains and forests, anticipation builds for one of the world's greatest engineering achievements—the Great Wall.
We choose Mutianyu because it offers a more scenic and enjoyable experience than many other sections. Surrounded by dense woodland and dramatic mountain scenery, the wall here snakes elegantly across ridgelines as far as the eye can see. After arriving, you'll have ample time to walk along the ancient fortifications, explore watchtowers and take in panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Unlike many rushed group tours, we allow plenty of time to absorb the atmosphere. Some guests choose to challenge themselves by climbing higher sections, while others prefer a leisurely walk between towers while enjoying the mountain scenery.
As the afternoon light begins to soften, the wall becomes particularly photogenic, creating some of the most memorable moments of the entire journey. After descending from the wall, we'll return comfortably to Beijing.
Following hotel pickup, we'll spend the morning exploring one of Beijing's most elegant imperial retreats. The Summer Palace offers a completely different atmosphere from the Forbidden City. While the Forbidden City was built to display authority, the Summer Palace was designed for relaxation. Walking beside Kunming Lake, you'll quickly understand why emperors and empresses escaped here during the warmer months.
We begin along the famous Long Corridor, where thousands of colorful paintings tell stories from Chinese folklore and history. Continuing through beautifully landscaped gardens, pavilions and lakeside pathways, you'll discover how traditional Chinese landscape design seeks harmony between architecture and nature.
A leisurely boat ride across Kunming Lake can be arranged when conditions permit, providing beautiful views of Longevity Hill rising above the water. The pace today is intentionally relaxed, allowing you to appreciate the quieter side of imperial life before continuing your journey.
After lunch, we'll transfer you to the railway station and assist with boarding procedures for your high-speed train to Xi'an.
Upon arrival in Xi'an, your local driver will greet you at the station and escort you directly to your hotel. After a short break, we'll head to Datang Everbright City, one of China's most impressive evening destinations.
As darkness falls, the entire district transforms into a dazzling display of lights, music and Tang Dynasty-inspired architecture. Street performers dressed in historical costumes interact with visitors, musicians entertain crowds, and illuminated buildings create a dreamlike atmosphere. This isn't merely a commercial district—it feels like stepping into a modern interpretation of China's golden age.
Dinner tonight offers an opportunity to sample Xi'an's famous local cuisine while soaking up the lively evening atmosphere before returning to your hotel.
After breakfast, we'll travel east of Xi'an to visit one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in human history.
The Terracotta Warriors continue to astonish visitors nearly fifty years after their discovery. As you enter the vast excavation hall, thousands of life-sized soldiers, horses and military officers appear before you in carefully arranged battle formations. Each figure possesses unique facial features and expressions, demonstrating a level of craftsmanship that remains astonishing even today.
Your guide will help bring this underground army to life by explaining the ambitions of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the man who unified China and commissioned this extraordinary burial complex more than two thousand years ago. Rather than simply viewing artifacts, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the political vision, technological achievements and cultural beliefs that made the Terracotta Army possible.
Before returning to Xi'an, we'll stop at a traditional cave dwelling village tucked into the surrounding countryside. This often-overlooked experience provides insight into rural life in Shaanxi Province and offers a fascinating contrast to the grandeur of the imperial tomb complex.
After enjoying a lunch featuring local specialties such as Biang Biang noodles and Roujiamo, we'll return to the city center and ascend the Ancient City Wall.
Stretching nearly fourteen kilometers around Xi'an's historic core, this is China's best-preserved city wall. Whether you choose to walk or rent a bicycle, the experience offers spectacular views over both the ancient city and its modern skyline. As the late afternoon sun casts long shadows across the battlements, the wall becomes one of the city's most atmospheric locations.
In the evening, we'll explore Yongxingfang, a beloved local food district where regional dishes, folk performances and traditional crafts combine to create a lively cultural experience. Unlike some of Xi'an's more tourist-focused food streets, Yongxingfang remains a favorite among local residents. As you wander through the bustling lanes, you'll have the opportunity to sample local specialties from different parts of Shaanxi Province, watch traditional artisans at work and experience the everyday energy of the city after dark.
After dinner and a relaxed evening stroll, your private driver will be waiting nearby to take you comfortably back to your hotel. As the illuminated city walls and historic streets gradually fade into the background, it's the perfect moment to reflect on a day that has taken you from the underground army of China's first emperor to the vibrant modern life of Xi'an. Enjoy a restful evening at your hotel before tomorrow's final exploration of the ancient capital.
Your final morning begins at Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, one of Xi'an's most important Buddhist landmarks and a symbol of the city's role along the ancient Silk Road.
Surrounded by peaceful temple gardens, the pagoda tells the story of the monk Xuanzang, whose legendary journey to India inspired one of China's most famous literary works, Journey to the West. Walking through the temple complex offers a quieter and more reflective experience, providing a meaningful conclusion to your exploration of China's ancient capitals.
From here, we'll continue to Shuyuanmen Cultural Street, one of Xi'an's most charming historical districts. Lined with traditional architecture, calligraphy workshops, tea houses and artisan studios, this area offers a glimpse into the city's scholarly traditions. Rather than rushing through souvenir shops, you'll have time to browse handcrafted artwork, watch calligraphers at work and perhaps enjoy a cup of tea in a centuries-old courtyard setting.
Before departure, we'll enjoy a leisurely farewell lunch featuring some final Shaanxi flavors. It's a chance to reflect on the journey—from the imperial grandeur of Beijing to the ancient wonders of Xi'an—and appreciate how these two cities together tell the story of China's past and present.
At the appropriate time, your driver will transfer you comfortably to Xian Airport or railway station, ensuring a smooth and stress-free departure. While five days may pass quickly, the memories of ancient walls, imperial palaces, hidden alleyways and unforgettable encounters with history tend to stay much longer.
