Day 1: Beijing → Gubei Water Town by Private Car | Gubei Water Town Exploration

Accommodation Accommodation:
4 star/5 star hotel/botique hotel (can be customized)
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

Your guide and private driver will meet you in your hotel lobby this morning before departing for Gubei Water Town, located at the foot of the Simatai Great Wall. As the busy cityscape gradually fades into the background, the scenery begins to change. Apartment towers give way to open countryside, and before long, the mountains of northeastern Beijing start appearing on the horizon. The drive takes around two hours, but it rarely feels that long. Along the way, your guide will introduce the region's history, explain what makes Gubei Water Town different from other ancient-style towns in China and share useful tips for making the most of the next two days. By the time you arrive, you'll already have a sense that this trip is less about checking off landmarks and more about slowing down and enjoying the journey.

Stepping into Gubei Water Town feels like entering a different pace of life altogether. Narrow canals wind through traditional courtyards, stone bridges connect quiet alleyways and red lanterns hang above the streets waiting for the evening to arrive. Unlike many destinations that are best appreciated from a single viewpoint, Gubei rewards wandering. Around almost every corner, you'll find a new perspective, whether it's a hidden courtyard, a waterside teahouse or a small artisan shop tucked beside the canal. Rather than rushing from attraction to attraction, we'll explore the town at a relaxed pace, allowing time to appreciate the atmosphere that makes this place so special. Your guide will lead you beyond the busiest streets to discover quieter corners where reflections dance across the water and local life unfolds naturally. The surrounding mountains are never far away, creating a beautiful backdrop that reminds you the Great Wall is waiting just beyond the town.

As midday approaches, we'll pause for lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy regional northern Chinese cuisine while overlooking the canals and watching the town go about its day.

After lunch, we'll gradually make our way toward one of the most scenic viewpoints in the entire town—the Church on the Hill. The walk itself is part of the experience. As you climb higher, rooftops begin to spread out beneath you, and the waterways that seemed hidden from street level suddenly reveal their full pattern. By the time we reach the church, the panorama is spectacular. From here, Gubei Water Town unfolds below like a painting, with its winding canals, grey-tiled roofs and distant mountain ridges stretching toward the horizon. On clear days, you can even spot sections of the Simatai Great Wall tracing the mountaintops in the distance. This is one of those places where visitors often intend to stay for a few minutes and end up lingering much longer. The changing afternoon light continuously transforms the view, making it one of the best photography locations of the entire journey.

As the sun begins to disappear behind the mountains, the town slowly starts preparing for its nightly transformation. Lanterns flicker to life along the canals, bridges glow softly above the water and the entire atmosphere becomes noticeably more magical. This is precisely why staying overnight matters. Visitors who leave before sunset only experience half of what makes Gubei Water Town special.

After dinner, we'll head to one of the best viewing locations for the famous Night Light Show. The combination of lights, music, reflections and mountain scenery creates an atmosphere that feels almost cinematic. As the performance unfolds, the town seems to glow from within, turning familiar streets and waterways into something entirely different from what you experienced earlier in the day. Even after the show concludes, the evening is far from over. Without the pressure of returning to Beijing, you'll have time to continue wandering the lantern-lit streets, enjoy a riverside drink or simply take in the peaceful atmosphere before settling into your hotel inside the scenic area for the night.

Day 2: Simatai Great Wall | Simatai Great Wall & Wangjing Tower Hike

Accommodation Accommodation:
N/A (Flexible, can be included based on your needs)
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

One of the greatest pleasures of staying overnight becomes clear the next morning. Before most visitors arrive, Gubei Water Town feels wonderfully peaceful. The canals are calm, shopkeepers quietly prepare for the day and the mountains surrounding the town seem even more impressive in the soft morning light.

After breakfast, your guide will meet you at the hotel and accompany you to the Simatai Great Wall. The transfer is short, but the scenery changes dramatically. The charming streets of the water town gradually give way to rugged mountain terrain, setting the stage for a very different experience from the previous day. While many sections of the Great Wall near Beijing have been heavily restored, Simatai retains a far more dramatic and authentic character. Here, the Wall follows steep mountain ridges with remarkable determination, climbing and descending across the landscape as if it were part of the mountains themselves. As we begin our exploration, you'll quickly notice the difference. The scenery feels wilder, the views stretch farther and the connection between the Wall and its natural surroundings is impossible to ignore. Each watchtower reveals a slightly different perspective, with valleys, forests and distant ridgelines unfolding in every direction. What makes Simatai particularly rewarding is the sense of progression. The higher you climb, the more expansive the landscape becomes. Looking back, the rooftops of Gubei Water Town gradually shrink below, creating a fascinating contrast between yesterday's waterside experience and today's mountain adventure.

Continuing along the Wall, we'll eventually reach Wangjing Tower, one of the most celebrated viewpoints in the Simatai section. The name means "Beijing Viewing Tower," and while modern weather conditions don't always allow views all the way back to the capital, the surrounding mountain panorama is more than enough to justify the climb. Standing here, it's easy to understand why photographers and hikers consider this one of the most scenic locations on the entire Great Wall. Layer upon layer of mountain ridges extend into the distance, while the Wall itself winds dramatically across the landscape before disappearing beyond the horizon. We'll spend time here enjoying the scenery, taking photographs and simply appreciating a viewpoint that few places near Beijing can rival. It's often one of the most memorable moments of the entire journey.

After descending from the Wall, we'll enjoy a well-deserved lunch nearby before beginning the comfortable drive back to Beijing. The return journey offers a chance to reflect on how much variety these two days have contained. Yesterday was spent wandering ancient streets beside quiet canals and watching lanterns illuminate the night. Today has been about mountain landscapes, panoramic views and one of the most spectacular sections of the Great Wall. Upon arrival in Beijing, we'll escort you back to your hotel and ensure everything is taken care of before concluding the tour. By then, you'll have experienced not only one of China's most beautiful water towns, but also one of the most dramatic Great Wall adventures available near the capital.

Excellent service and a stress-free family trip from start to finish

This 11-day private tour through Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou was one of the most enjoyable family trips we have ever taken. What really stood out for us was the service from start to finish. Jennifer was our main contact from Buer China Travel and she was absolutely fantastic. She responded quickly to every message, patiently adjusted the itinerary multiple times based on our preferences, and always made us feel like everything was under control. It really gave us peace of mind before even arriving in China. During the trip, everything ran smoothly. There were no stressful moments at all. Our guide was extremely kind, patient, and very knowledgeable. She had a wonderful way of explaining the history behind each site without making it feel like a lecture, and she was especially good with our children, which made a huge difference for our family. We also appreciated how flexible the itinerary was. We never felt rushed, and we had enough time to truly enjoy each destination, whether it was walking along West Lake in Hangzhou or exploring the classical gardens in Suzhou. Overall, this was a very well-organized and thoughtfully designed trip. We would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting China for the first time.
