Your day begins with a comfortable pickup from your hotel. As we make our way through northwest Beijing, your guide will introduce the fascinating story of China's imperial gardens. While many travelers imagine emperors spending their days in the Forbidden City, the reality is that they often preferred somewhere much greener, quieter and considerably more scenic. And that's exactly where we're heading.
Explore the Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) Imperial Gardens
Before long, the city begins to soften. Busy avenues gradually give way to tree-lined roads, historic neighborhoods and expansive green spaces. Then, beyond the gates, one of China's most beautiful landscapes unfolds before you. The Summer Palace is often described as a garden. That's technically true. It's also like calling the Forbidden City a large house. Spanning hills, lakes, temples, pavilions and corridors, the Summer Palace was designed as a masterpiece of landscape architecture where nature and human creativity blend almost seamlessly.
As we enter the grounds, the first thing you'll likely notice is the sense of space. Kunming Lake stretches across the landscape like a mirror reflecting the sky, while Longevity Hill rises gracefully behind it. The scenery feels less like a tourist attraction and more like a traditional Chinese painting brought to life. Walking along the famous Long Corridor, you'll discover thousands of colorful paintings hidden beneath its beams. Many visitors admire the artwork without realizing that each panel tells a story—from ancient legends and historical events to scenes from classical literature. Your guide will point out some of the most fascinating details that most visitors pass by without noticing.
Continuing toward the lakeshore, we'll encounter some of the palace's most photogenic viewpoints. Elegant bridges stretch across the water, willow trees sway gently in the breeze and traditional pavilions appear against the backdrop of distant hills. Depending on the season, the landscape transforms completely. Spring brings blossoms along the shoreline. Summer fills the gardens with lotus flowers. Autumn paints the hillsides in warm colors, while winter occasionally turns the palace into a peaceful snow-covered wonderland. At several carefully selected viewpoints, we'll pause for photographs and allow time to simply appreciate the scenery. After all, the Summer Palace wasn't designed for rushing. Neither should your visit be.
Experience a Local Lunch Near the Summer Palace
As lunchtime approaches, we'll stop at a well-loved local restaurant nearby. This area of Beijing is known for a variety of excellent dining options. Depending on your preferences, you may enjoy traditional Beijing dishes, northern Chinese specialties or lighter seasonal meals. Your guide will happily recommend local favorites and help you navigate the menu.
Visit the Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) Ruins
With appetites satisfied, we'll continue to a place that tells a very different story. Only a short distance away lies the Old Summer Palace, once regarded as one of the most magnificent royal gardens ever created. If the Summer Palace represents beauty and harmony, the Old Summer Palace represents memory. Known as Yuanmingyuan, this vast imperial complex was once filled with elaborate palaces, lakes, gardens and priceless treasures. European visitors who saw it during its height often described it as one of the greatest garden masterpieces in the world. Today, however, the atmosphere feels very different. As we walk among the remaining ruins and peaceful lakes, your guide will explain the dramatic events that changed the site's fate forever. Rather than simply viewing scattered stones and broken columns, you'll begin to understand why Yuanmingyuan remains such an important symbol in modern Chinese history. The contrast between past grandeur and present tranquility creates one of the most thought-provoking experiences in Beijing.
Explore the Tsinghua University Surrounding Area
Leaving Yuanmingyuan behind, we'll continue toward the neighborhood surrounding Tsinghua University. The transition feels almost symbolic. From imperial gardens and dynastic history, we now step into the world of innovation, education and modern China. Widely regarded as one of the country's most prestigious universities, Tsinghua has educated generations of influential scholars, scientists, entrepreneurs and national leaders. While access policies may vary, we'll explore the surrounding area and share insights into the university's history, traditions and remarkable influence on modern Chinese society. The leafy avenues, academic atmosphere and youthful energy provide a refreshing contrast to the imperial settings visited earlier in the day. It's also a wonderful place to experience a side of Beijing that many tourists never see. Depending on timing, we may stop at a popular café frequented by students and locals, offering a chance to relax and soak in the neighborhood's vibrant atmosphere.
Return to Hotel in Comfort
As the afternoon light begins to soften, we'll start our journey back to the city center. During the drive, your guide will be happy to answer questions, share recommendations for the rest of your stay, or suggest hidden corners of Beijing worth exploring. Upon arrival at your hotel, we'll ensure everything is taken care of before saying goodbye.
By the end of the day, you'll have experienced far more than two famous attractions. You'll have explored a royal retreat, reflected on a defining chapter of history and glimpsed the future through one of China's most respected academic communities. And perhaps you'll discover that some of Beijing's most fascinating stories are found not behind palace walls, but beside quiet lakes and shaded pathways.
