Best Hotels in Hangzhou: Where to Stay (Local Expert Guide 2026)

Written by Vivian
Updated: July 1, 2026

Choosing where to stay in Hangzhou can be more confusing than it looks — especially if it's your first time visiting. Many travelers head straight for hotels near West Lake, as it's the most famous area in the city. While it offers great scenery, it's not always the most convenient or comfortable choice for every traveler, particularly during busy seasons. The truth is, the best area to stay in Hangzhou depends on your travel style, budget, and how you plan to explore the city. In this guide, we'll help you figure out exactly where to stay — based on real travel experience, not just location on a map.

Best Hotels by The Positioning and Style

In Hangzhou, where you stay kind of decides how your trip feels. Want to roll out of bed and be at West Lake in five minutes? Go central. Prefer peace, space, and fewer people? Head a bit further out. Traveling with kids? You already know convenience wins. Figure out your vibe first — the hotel choice usually sorts itself out after that.

Luxury hotel in Hangzhou:
If you're into that sleek, high-floor city feel, Park Hyatt Hangzhou leans more in that direction — a little more understated, but very polished. Some people, though, prefer a bit more space and quiet — in that case, Conrad Hangzhou feels more relaxed, with great views over the city.

Best hotel with West Lake view:
If you're here for the West Lake experience, Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake really leans into that whole calm, poetic Hangzhou vibe — it's the kind of place where you suddenly feel like slowing down a bit. Sofitel Hangzhou Westlake is a bit more low-key, but honestly, for the price, the lake view can be a nice little win.

Boutique hotel:
Amanfayun is where you go when you're ready to disappear a little — it's quiet, leafy, and yes, your phone suddenly feels less important. And Tea Boutique Hotel — not trying too hard, just chill, tea fields all around… kind of hard to be stressed there.

Best hotel for families:
Traveling with kids? Hangzhou Senbo Resort is one of those places where they're busy and you're… finally not. Enough said. Sheraton Grand Hangzhou Wetland Park Resort is quieter, greener, and good if you're okay trading a bit of distance for a slower pace.

Best area for first-time visitors: West Lake
While this area is the busiest, it's also the heart of your visit to Hangzhou. As local experts, we recommend staying near West Lake, heading out early for a stroll, and enjoying a coffee—you'll truly experience the charm of the place.

How to Choose Where to Stay in Hangzhou

If there's one thing we've learned from showing people around, it's this — the area you pick matters way more than the hotel brand. Same hotel standard, different neighborhood… completely different Hangzhou.
Staying by West Lake puts everything right at your doorstep (though it can get a bit busy). If you venture just a little further from the center, the atmosphere becomes quieter, slower, and more in tune with the local vibe. Choosing the right area is the most important step—the hotel itself is the easy part.

First time in Hangzhou → Stay near West Lake

First time here? Honestly, just book somewhere around West Lake and you'll thank yourself later. Most of what you came to see is right there anyway. It might be a bit busy, sure — but being able to walk out and have everything within reach? That's kind of the whole point.

Hotel room near West Lake Hangzhou, large window overlooking lush green woods, cozy indoor lounge area     Classic Chinese garden at West Lake hotel

Pros (from our on-the-ground experience):

  • Most major attractions are within walking distance or a short ride

  • You can enjoy the lake at different times of day (quiet mornings, lively evenings)

  • Plenty of restaurants, cafés, and shops nearby

Cons (we'll be honest with you):

  • Super crowded in peak seasons

  • Hotel prices are higher

  • Some so-called "lake-view rooms" actually have poor views or are blocked off.

Best for: Travelers who want to see the most with the least effort.

Our local tip: Not all "lake-view rooms" are worth booking. Many hotels claim to have a lake view, but may be blocked by trees or just a "background view". We always recommend to choose specific locations (such as Broken Bridge/Lakefront) rather than just focusing on the "lake view" label

Best Hotels by Season in Hangzhou

Hangzhou changes a lot with the seasons — and where you stay should probably change with it. Spring, summer, autumn… different spots just feel better at different times of year. So instead of sticking to one area, we usually recommend picking your base based on the season — it just makes the whole trip work better.

Spring→West Lake is best

Spring is the best time to experience Hangzhou at its most iconic.

Why is spring the best season to visit West Lake?

  • Cherry blossoms, peach blossoms and willows are all gathered in the West Lake.

  • The climate is pleasant and suitable for long walks.

  • The "most classic scenes" of West Lake are mostly seen in spring.

Core logic: Coming to Hangzhou in spring is solely for the beauty of the West Lake itself.

Tip:
1. Spring is the peak season and prices have risen significantly.
2. It is recommended to make reservations in advance.

Summer→Avoid the core West Lake area, choose Xixi Wetland

Summer in Hangzhou is hot and crowded—especially around West Lake.

Why is the Xixi Wetland a better choice?

  • Wetland areas are cooler with more greenery and water.

  • Less crowded, more relaxing.

  • Better suited for resort-style stays.

Core logic: Summer is not about "enjoying the scenery", but about "escaping the heat and relaxing".

Autumn→Stay in Tea Village areas

Autumn offers the most balanced and visually refined experience.

Why is autumn suitable for this place:

  • The weather is pleasant and the visibility is good.

  • The tea mountain has a stronger sense of depth and hierarchy.

  • Suitable for hiking and photography.

Tour Experience Features:

  • Quieter and more atmospheric.

  • Fewer crowds than West Lake.

  • More of a "deep travel" type of experience.

Core logic: Stay within the scenery and deeply experience the other side of Hangzhou.

Winter→West Lake (hidden gem!)

Winter is low season—but often the best value. On snowy days, the West Lake takes on a more serene atmosphere. "The Broken Bridge with Remaining Snow" is a very classic scenic spot. So you can choose a more upscale and scenic hotel.

Why this works:

  • Fewer crowds, more peaceful atmosphere

  • Lower hotel prices

  • A chance to see a quieter, more authentic side of West Lake

Core logic: Upgrade to a nicer hotel for less money—total win.

Where We Actually Recommend

After doing this for a while, we've got a pretty good sense of what works — and what doesn't. For most people, we still point them toward West Lake. It's kind of the “hard to mess up” option — everything's nearby, and it just makes the whole trip easier. Honestly, it's the choice people rarely come back and complain about.

Why this choice the best:

  • Close to nearly all major attractions

  • Minimal travel time between sights

  • Easy to explore without complicated planning

  • Ideal for short stays and first-time visitors

Only pick other areas if you have a clear, specific travel goal—otherwise, West Lake is your safest bet.

Common Booking Mistakes We Help You Avoid

We've seen it happen more than a few times — great hotel, wrong location...and suddenly the whole trip feels harder than it should.

These are just a few easy-to-miss things people tend to overlook when booking. Nothing major, but getting them right can save you a lot of time (and a bit of unnecessary frustration).

Only focusing on "lake view"

“Lake view"does not always mean a good view.

1. Some rooms are partially blocked.
2. Some are far from the main lake area.
3. Prices are often significantly higher.

Staying too far away

Distances in Hangzhou can be misleading.

1. Time is consumed by traffic.
2. The schedule was disrupted.
3. If there is a traffic jam, it may disturb your mood.

Wrong area in peak season

1. Traffic increases significantly.
2. Travel time becomes less predictable.
3. People are crowded together, resulting in a poor overall experience.

At the end of the day, in Hangzhou, getting the location right just makes everything easier — less running around, more actually enjoying where you are. As local experts, we usually help sort both the hotel and the itinerary anyway — just keeps the whole trip nice and smooth.
